Our History

SAGA Community Focus (SCF) was developed from a desire of the founders of SAGA Construction & Development to give back to the community in which they operate and make their home. The activities of the organization, now officially formed as SAGA Community Focus, are still driven by that same desire.

Our Mission is to enhance the Northeastern NC region through community outreach, awareness programs, and charitable donations. We aspire to collaborate and partner with existing charitable organizations in an effort to strengthen their current platform and help increase sustainability. We also identify needs of the local area that are currently not being adequately met and implement initiatives to fill in these gaps.

Present and Future Activities

SAGA Community Focus looks forward to being one of the go-to organizations to increase the level of support to the greater community and assist in meeting their needs! The goal is to identify additional community needs that are not presently being met, as well as continuing to partner with organizations that have been supported by SAGA Construction & Development in the past, prior to SCF’s creation. This support will be provided through direct support to SCF by SAGA Construction & Development, as well as by soliciting funds from the community via challenges similar to the AED program initiated in 2013.

Other charitable requests from the existing nonprofit community will be considered for assistance, with the expectation that SCF can leverage SAGA Construction & Development’s sizable number of business connections in order to boost awareness for local charitable causes and help increase charitable giving from the entire community through good-natured fundraising competition between businesses.

In the future, should an unmet, charitable need present itself in way that would allow SCF to become involved without providing wholly duplicative services, SCF has considered the need to create a new direct-services program or initiative at that time.

Past Activities

Feeding the Hungry

Various SAGA family members began by volunteering to take on responsibility for some weekly meals at Ruthie’s Kitchen, a 501(c) (3) organization that feeds anyone in need for dinner every Tuesday night. They provided food for the meal, served all of the guests, and helped to clean the premises after.

Providing In-Kind Professional Services

SAGA Construction & Development employees created websites for two local 501(c) (3) organizations, Ruthie’s Kitchen and Food For Thought, as well as a local 501(c) (6) organization, the Outer Banks Home Builders Association.

Spearheading an AED Campaign

On 5/28/13, one of SAGA Construction & Development’s supervisors experienced a cardiac event on one of their job sites. Because a local police officer had an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in his patrol car, the supervisor’s life was saved that day. At that time, there were only two AED units owned by the Kill Devil Hills Police Department.

Event Planning Assistance

SAGA Construction & Development has been an event sponsor and has taken an active role in planning the annual fundraising event for the Association of American Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), a charitable organization.

Encouraging “Shoulder-Season” Tourism in our County and neighboring Counties

Outer Banks Sporting Events (OBSE) is a 501(c)(3) that organizes four athletic-related event weekends annually for a range of ages and abilities, while improving the quality of life in Dare County, and promoting off-peak season economic development.

Protecting Local, Historically-Significant Sites

The Whalehead in Historic Corolla is a remarkable celebrated landmark whose mission is to offer a piece of the past and a cultural experience to visitors. It is an integral part of the Currituck Heritage Park and a Currituck County owned asset.

Providing for Less Fortunate Children

In Nov-Dec 2013, the Dare County Department of Social Services announced to the public that there were a number of children in DSS’ custody that needed Christmas gifts because DSS did not have a budget for Christmas gifts.

Creating a Charitable 501(c)3 Organization

In June 2013, SAGA Construction & Development began to realize that with so many community needs, and such a commitment on their part to meet as many of those needs as possible in various ways, creating a separate, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization was an obvious next step.
